MBBS Internship
It depends on where you are doing MBBS internship.
If you are doing from a government medical college then your life will be awesome because you will be exposed to a wide variety of patients and you will hardly get time to eat or sleep. In specialities like OBG you will be handling normal deliveries all by yourself and senior PGS and consultants only come into picture whenever there is a difficult or a complicated case. You can learn giving and suturing episiotomy, suturing in c -section, foleys cathertisation.
Even in OPDs you will be exposed to a very large number of patient load because of which your decision making capabilities and clinical skills will improve drastically.
In a specialities like surgery you will get to suture of different types, perform basic surgeries, put catheters, IV lines.
In emergency medicine you will get to learn intubation, cpr, i.v cannulations, treating all kinds of emergencies like burns patients, accidents, drowning, trauma, accident, M.I and many others.
In pediatrics you will be posted in nicu , picu and will be doing new born examination and resuscitation. Learning how to vaccinate. And obviously handling opd pateints and in patient for a wide variety of diseases.
Overall, you will get to learn a lot, and integrate what you have read so far with actual practise and real life scenarios and presentations. Observe each and everything in detail. Learn how much ever you can. Don’t miss any opportunity to learn any hands on procedure.
Like in anaesthesia you can learn to give spinal, epidural and various other modalities of anaesthesia and intubation.
In general medicine you can learn to put ryles tube, nasogastric tube, urinary catheterization, ascitic tap, pleural tap etc.
In ent you will learn to perform ear examination, laryngoscopy, assist basic surgeries like tonsillectomy, addenoidectomy, c s o m ,a s o m surgeries.
Overall you will get to learn a lot in a government medical college.
But if you are doing your internship from a private medical college then the scenario will be different because in a private medical college the patient load is very low and usually the interns are not given the opportunity to perform hands-on procedures or any kind of invasive procedure.
In the private medical colleges the interns are made to do clerical and grade 4 work. You will be mainly expected to maintain the files and documentation up to Mark. Also you need to collect the lab report and update them in the patient files. if a patient is planned for surgery then you will be expected to prepare the OT list and shift the patient to the OT. After the surgery you will be expected to perform post op care and monitor the vitals. Even while blood transfusion you will be expected to check the vitals constantly. And after delivery you have to again do Postpartum check up. In OPDs you will be expected to take history and perform basic examination like taking vitals and general examination. You have to take care of patient’s insurance documents. And you have to type discharge summaries and you will be constantly running in the hospital to take printouts.
In M.s ramaiah we as interns were even expected to maintain dummy patient files and make up fake patients in surgery opd just to fill space in their registers.
In a private medical college you will be doing documentation work and just filling papers and improving your handwriting. If you get the opportunity to transfer your internship to a Government Medical College please do so and it is highly advisable as per my experience because internship is a time period where you are expected to polish your clinical skills and gain hands on experience. If you do not do so at this time then you will have to face a lot of problems while seeking a job. And if you cannot get the transfer to a government medical college for your internship then at least try to study as much as possible to secure a good rank in order to get a good government seat for a clinical branch so at least you can learn in your post graduation years.
